Whale watchers spotted the first humpback whale of the winter migratory season off the coast of Maui Wednesday. The Pacific Whale Foundation says several boats spotted the juvenile whale about two miles off Kaanapali.

There won't be a fluctuating sales tax in Homer. Voters Tuesday rejected a seasonal sales tax aimed at tourists. The measure would have raised city sales tax one percent from May through September and subtracted one percent from the current rate of 6.5 percent during the rest of the year.
